What is Stencyl?

Stencyl is a free game creation platform in which users of all skill levels can create games and share them over the web.

Our mantra is that anybody can make games, and we truly believe in it. Whether you're a beginner or expert, we provide the tools and services needed to make great games. Stencyl does not impose any artificial limits like other programs — the only limit is one's own imagination. We want to democratize game creation by doing the same for games that YouTube has done for videos.

What can I make with Stencyl?

Anything that your imagination desires. Stencyl can make practically any kind of 2D game.

No Programming Necessary.

Most game creation software today was designed by developers for developers. Programming is necessary to make anything decent in these programs.

This approach is terrible. Designers and artists are shut out because they don't know how to program, but these are the very people who potentially have the best game ideas. Sadly, since these creative people have no means to express themselves, their great ideas go unrealized.

Stencyl is different. We've designed our tools so that no programming is necessary to create the games of your dreams. Programming is still there for those who like doing things the old way, but normal users won't need it.

Game creation is a well-established area. What does Stencyl bring to the table?

We'll admit it. Game creators have been around for 20 years now, but in recent years, there's been very little innovation or advancement.

Nobody's genuinely tackled the problem of making game creation easier and more accessible. Everybody has made their programs more powerful, but by doing this, they have also made them more complex and more convoluted.

Users don't want this. Users want easier tools, but nobody's listening. And this is where Stencyl comes in.

We're stepping in to change the way games are made. But that's hardly all that we're bringing to the table. We'll announce much more after we launch.

Why are there no screenshots or details?

As a startup, we're currently operating in "stealth mode" and will not disclose any screenshots, videos or detailed information until we launch.
