Crash Course 2: Invaders - Part 5

by Hectate (Updated on 2015-02-01)

Part 5: Importing Sounds

Step 30: Now it’s time to import our music and sound files. This time we’re going to show you a different way to import assets, by dragging and dropping files. First, click on the Dashboard and then on Sounds.

Step 31: With the sound files on your desktop (General Space Shooter Spacey Level.mp3 and Explosion.mp3), click on one and drag it over into the dotted line box (shown below).

Remember, we need to go back to the Dashboard to drag the second file in also.

Step 32: Now you’ll have two sounds. Make sure each sound is set to the correct type, as shown (the music should be set to Music, the explosion sound effect set to Sound Effect).

With all our assets in place, it’s time to set up the Scene that will function as our main level.

Click here to go to Part 6.

Can you play the game silently?

Stencyl 2.2 doesn't allow .png to be imported as a sound file, its not possible. Changing the extension from .png to .mp3 also doesn't work. Best solution is to download the sound file from StencylForge.

The correct name for the music track is "General Shooter Spacey Level" not "General Space Shooter Spacey Level". The explosion sound effect is named correctly and can also be downloaded from StencylForge.

I got it to work just fine, but why the heck sound files are given a .png file extension?? This tutorial is geared towards beginners yet this seems massively unintuitive to me; and given the number of comments from people having problems, I'm obviously right. I don't get it.

The .MP3 is actually called a .PNG but is in fact the music, just drag it into the game!

I had to get the sounds through StencylForge. The .PNG files do not work (using WIN7 if that means anything).

If you are having issues with this, simply click on the StencylForge button on top and on the right search for "General Shooter Spacey Level" and "Explosion".

The sounds aren't working for me at all. I worked out to change the extension to .mp3 but the sounds still won't import. The 'explosion' sound just doesn't do anything when I try to import it and the 'general shooter...' stays on finalizing indefinitely (or until I close the tab for the sound I've just added.

For clarity's sake, I was referring to the Explorer menu, not Stencyl.

Just replace the .png extension wit .mp3 and you're in business. No extension? Go to Tools > Folder Options > View and under the Advanced Settings, you should untick the box labelled "Hide extensions of known file types."
