Crash Course 2: Invaders - Part 15

by Hectate (Updated on 2015-05-02)

Part 15: Final Touches

Step 102: Now that you’ve tested your game and everything works, it’s time to export it to your desktop as a SWF file. That way, you can open the file in any browser to play the game! Open the Publish menu, select Web, Flash.

Step 103: Stencyl will create a SWF file and ask you to choose where to save the file and what to name it.

Congratulations! Now that you have your Crash Course game, you can take on the Challenges that follow, and modify the Crash Course game further, or you can start on your own game! The choice is yours.

Here are a few challenges you could take on if you want to take this project further. We won't provide you with any solutions, it's up to you to figure out how to add these features.

Challenges

Challenge 1: Find a way to make the Enemy Ships move back and forth on screen.

Challenge 2: Restrict how frequently the player can fire the cannon, either by setting a maximum for the number of bullets on screen or by limiting how quickly the player’s Ship can fire bullets.

Challenge 3: Make the Enemy Ships fire back at the Player.

Where do I go from here?

There's a whole lot more to Stencyl, and we encourage you to experiment on your own and read through the rest of Stencylpedia to find out how to import your own resources, create your own Behaviors, and enable Stencyl to help you create the games of your dreams.

Continue to Chapter 2

@TPing The first challenge is really easy all you have to do is to make the enemy ship move just like bullets then (optional) when the ship reaches a point you could negate the ship speed just like you did to make the ship not go beyond the screen and to move the ship left with the same attribute.

Sorry if there is any grammar mistake.

When you hit the enemies if you want sound look at part 12, section 82..

when the heath points <=0 use the Play sound button again with the explosion, before the kill self button. enjoy!

Might I suggest that you provide the solutions to the 3 challenges by providing 3 links (one for each challenge) on this page that says something like, "If you have tried everything you can think of click the 3 links below to see the solutions."

I believe this provides just enough incentive to try applying your new found skills, but also provides a valuable learning experience once you have applied your best effort to solving the three challenges.

Im excited I finished the tutorials and even got my aliens to move completely to the edge of the screen and re appear on the left side then move down their height and continue moving right and then dropping again etc. etc. But I ran into a problem trying to figure out how to make the aliens and the player ship collide and end the game but it was still a blast. I think Im going to be spending alot more time learning this.

Great tutorial. I'm a non-programmer and did this with my 6-yr-old daughter. We both learned a lot. I even had to do a little de-bugging myself when my bullets weren't making the ships flash (I had set up the collision groups fine, but I had left bullets in the actor group).

Anyway, thank you for putting this together. Well worth the effort. This is my daughter's new favorite daddy/daughter activity.

I'm still wondering how to get my ship to move more than one millimeter in either direction, and be in the middle instead of the top left. ;( will find it eventually! LOVE THIS GAME AND ITS POTENTIAL.

EVIL LAUGHTER!!! AHAHAH good luck with your games, guys!!! ;)

I liked the tutorial and I learned a lot! I do have a bit of feedback, though. As a traditional programmer, I felt uneasy attaching potentially reusable logic directly to the stage. I've just started with Stencyl, but it seems like behaviors would have been the more "object oriented" or oraganized approach.

I understand this tutorial has beginners in mind, but I think code organization is one of those things where it's never to early to teach. I fear that some may leave this tutorial and never go on an learn about proper organization. This will likely lead them to head aches in the future when they tackle larger projects...
