Crash Course 2: Invaders - Part 1

by Jon (Updated on 2014-02-02)

Introduction

Welcome to Stencyl’s Crash Course 2. The first Crash Course helped you learn the basics, and this follow-up lesson will give you a quick intro to Stencyl's Design Mode (the block builder) and show you how to build a simple game.

The game you’ll build will be a simplified version of the classic game Space Invaders, where the player controls a spaceship and shoots enemies that are floating at the top of the screen.

Let’s get started...

Part 1: Creating a New Game

Step 1: Click on the box that says “Click here to create a new Game.”

Step 2: Select the Blank Game option from the list of available Kits and click Next.

You'll get a dialog that allows you to name your game and set the game screen's Width and Height. Name your game Invaders and leave the Width at 640 pixels and the Height at 480 pixels.

Game Setup window

Next, we’ll start importing assets.

Click here to go to Part 2.

I have an issue when I get on the software and click "create new game" when that menu appears there are no options to click, just a scroll bar. Then when slide my cursor over certain areas the "next" and "cancel" options appear. When I attempt to just click on the NEXT button it sends me to the "create page". When I click create a message appears telling me "Could not load users/myname/stencylworks/games ZIP the game up and post it to the stencyl works forum" then I click ok and it just starts "opening" the game but never loads... HELP PLEASE!! Great ideas for games but I can't get to work...

Just a note: If you are coming into this from the first tutorial, you need to CLOSE the first game in order to CREATE a new game. :)

Audio Files - MP3s are PNGs
As "whatevermedia" mentioned the zip file does not contain the audio files but instead png files.
I clicked on the StencylForge button on the tool bar, selected Media then Sounds. I then did a search for Explosion and General Shooter Spacey Level and found them booth very quickly and down loaded them to my open game.
It was a very quick and easy process and solved the problem.

Can someone please update the assets.zip so that it includes the correct files? The files that are supposed to be MP3s are PNGs, and simply renaming them does not work.
