Abigayl's Interactive Tutorials (Part 1)
by Joe (Updated on 2012-07-21)
Tutorial 1 - The Basics
CHANGES TO CURRENT STENCYL VERSION:
- Game Center is now Dashboard
- No longer need to make Actor Behaviors; can use "Events" tab instead
- Now need to use "Add an Event" at the top left to make the headings
- If using events, do not need to "Attach to Actor" (still needed with Behaviors though)
- Collisions Groups are now in the Settings button at the top of the page
- Collisions between Actors are now handled by collision events (use "Member of Group" and change the group to "Actors")

Part 2: Attributes, Saving/Loading, Kongregate API
Part 3: Advanced Controls, Spawning
Part 4: Mouse-based Shooting, Collisions and HP
Part 5: Music, Screen Boundaries, Backgrounds, Power-ups and More
Part 6: Virtually Lagless Actors

I have studied game design for over 5 years now, and have recently stumbled upon Stencyl. I must say this is the best tutorial I have seen thus far. Very Interactive! I Love It! Although i had a few issues with the new version via the old one on the tutorial, in the long run it helped me learn a bit more about the interface. Thanks!!

Argh, looks like the link got busted... Trying once again (don't put in the quotes:
" http://www.kongregate.com/games/Abi gayl/stencyl-2-0-tutorial-1-basics "
Also, if you need help, my livestream is always an option too. I don't have a good system to be notified of comments here, which is why I haven't been responding. The stream is:

For everyone who is getting confused since this is based on 1.x instead of 2.x, here's the link to the first of the 2.x series (the links to parts 2-5 are in the "Updates" section): http://www.kongregate.com/games/Abi gayl/stencyl-2-0-tutorial-1-basics< br />
I've tried getting Stencyl to put up the more recent ones, but it seems to be a low priority while 3.0 is being developed.

Another thing, if you can't find "Collision Groups" from the tutorial:
1) click on the settings button on the top ribbon
2) click on the groups button on the left in the window that popped up.
that there is collision groups.

For new users with the latest version of stencyl, you can add the "Always" block in player behavior by doing this -
1) click on add event (on the left top) of the tab you are adding behavior in.
2) go to basics
3) click on when updating.
Bingo! ...you have the always block.
took me some time to find out. And the tutorial should really be updated. don't know what other problems i'll face ahead in the tutorial but ill post solutions, to the problems i'll find, here.

It's clearly been months since anyone updated
this article. I'm trying stencyl for the first time. I
came here to watch a tutorial video, but nothing,
blank. I've been going round in circles for hours.
Started thinking it's my browser but no. I'm so
upset. Could some please point me in the
direction of a youtube video of this tutorial? Or
maybe I should just try gamemaker instead.

Thanks for the tutorials. I am trying to follow this one and so far have the following issues:
1. I did not see instructions on how to start the demo (click the screen). Figured it out. Would be nice to have a "Click here" to start the tutorial.
2. Often the screen advances quickly to the next slide...i may have double clicked. I can't find a way to get to the previous screen so I have to reload. Would be nice to have a "prev/next" button or area.
3. I am in version 2.2 and when I click behaviors it does not pop up a "Categories" window where I can pick the type of behavior. Which makes me wonder if 2.2 has these by default or if I have to download them or...
When I add a behavior it does not come up with the "Always" block. I believe you have to add an Update event for that...
