Abigayl's Interactive Tutorials (Part 1)

by Joe (Updated on 2012-07-21)

Tutorial 1 - The Basics

CHANGES TO CURRENT STENCYL VERSION:

  • Game Center is now Dashboard
  • No longer need to make Actor Behaviors; can use "Events" tab instead
  • Now need to use "Add an Event" at the top left to make the headings
  • If using events, do not need to "Attach to Actor" (still needed with Behaviors though)
  • Collisions Groups are now in the Settings button at the top of the page
  • Collisions between Actors are now handled by collision events (use "Member of Group" and change the group to "Actors")

Tiles shouldn't change how the coding works. If you want to die when hitting a tile, change the group to "tiles" instead.

Hi! I tried looping it but it still gets cut at a certain point. Anyway, It works fine now. I've solved it by converting the audio file to a different sample rate. ;D

Did you make sure to LOOP the sound instead of just PLAY it?

Hi! First of all, I'd like to thank Abi for this awesome video guide. It really helps newbies like me. But I've encountered a problem just recently. I tried placing background music at one scene. It runs fine when I test it but when I published it to .swf, the music suddenly stops at one point. What could be the cause of it?

Vinay, your question is confusing... why does hitting a bullet kill all of your actors? Perhaps it would be easier if you came to my livestream to ask in person: livestream.com/poweredbyflowers

This was one of the best tutorials for anything....I skimmed through it since Im too tired at the moment to do those things myself, but for a tried individual who just skimmed the tutorial, I learned a lot!

Vinay: That is covered in tutorial 5.

CrimsonThunder: Recycled actors have issues of their own. In 1.4, I tested them and found them to be MORE laggy... I have heard that 2.0 does a better job with them, but for me personally, I am not going to use them given all of the quirks I ran into... had to basically scrap a game once because they screwed it up so badly.

Would it make more sense for the enemies to be recycled? I read up a bit that they are a lot easier on the lag.
