Abigayl's Interactive Tutorials (Part 1)

by Joe (Updated on 2012-07-21)

Tutorial 1 - The Basics

CHANGES TO CURRENT STENCYL VERSION:

  • Game Center is now Dashboard
  • No longer need to make Actor Behaviors; can use "Events" tab instead
  • Now need to use "Add an Event" at the top left to make the headings
  • If using events, do not need to "Attach to Actor" (still needed with Behaviors though)
  • Collisions Groups are now in the Settings button at the top of the page
  • Collisions between Actors are now handled by collision events (use "Member of Group" and change the group to "Actors")

Berga, I made these tutorials using the original StencylWorks, so things like the choosing categories for behaviors no longer exist. If it wasn't for my plans to make a new tutorial set when SW2 comes out, I would update the scenes to match what you see.

Great tut Abigayl
Hope you make more of them.
Only thing I was wondering about is that some screens in the gamecenter did not look the same on my machine. Think it was when you made a new behavior, you had a field for category. This is not the case on my PC. Maybe different versions?
I'm testing 1.4

Glad to help Rados :)

Stalin, go to the Game Center and check your Collision Groups. Make sure that your enemies do not hit each other but DO hit the player (so if your enemies are "actors" and your player is "players", then when you click on the "actors" group, the "actors" button should be blue but the "players" button should be green).

Hey I have some questions.
1. All of my sprites seem to rotate, based on where they're going.
2. My character isn't registering that it's colliding with the enemy, and it isn't reloading the room.

Otherwise, it's a great beginner tutorial!

Chandra, the off-screen issue is one that I address in Tutorial 5. I had been searching for better solutions, but could not find any, hence the delay to the fifth one. If you want the quick fix, I have a behavior on StencylForge called "8 way motion with screen edge detection" that will do the trick.
